Inter-calibration of Ers Ami and Metop Ascat Backscatter Measurements

چکیده
Scatterometer derived products have become an important input dataset for climate change research. For this reason accurate radiometric calibration of scatterometer is a prime requirement from the scientific community to enable them to establish a long-term consistent scatterometer dataset. The calibration method that we introduce here is a stepwise relative calibration approach using extended area Land-Targets. Intracalibration of a scatterometer mission will account for instrument related drifts, while inter-calibration is performed to identify possible difference of various scatterometer missions. Similarities in instrument design of ERS-2 AMI and MetOp-A ASCAT allow the merging of these datasets, with the proposed stepwise calibration approach, and result in global backscatter observations spanning over 20 years.

Ascat Scatterometer Calibration over the Ocean: Analysis of the 3-dimensional Measurement Space
A new scatterometer, the so-called Advanced scatterometer (ASCAT), onboard MetOp-A satellite was successfully launched on October 19 2006. During the commissioning phase one of the main goals is to accurately calibrate the instrument. The radar backscatter has been calibrated using three groundbased transponders only in February 2008. However, stable and good quality ASCAT winds are produced ro...

The EUMETSAT Metop-B satellite with onboard the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) has been successfully launched on September 17, 2012. ASCAT-B onboard Metop-B is identical to the already operational scatterometer ASCAT-A onboard Metop-A which was launched in 2006. KNMI has further developed an ocean calibration method for ASCAT-A, based on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) wind inputs, the so-ca...

Introduction satellite based scatterometers provide high resolution all-weather wind vector fields over the seas. Wind speed and wind direction are provided at high accuracy under all weather conditions. The allweather EsA ERs scatterometer observations have proven its significant impact for the forecasting of fast developing and severe weather. Moreover, scatterometer wind fields are provided ...

The Advanced scatterometer, ASCAT, on MetOp-A was launched on 19 October 2006 as the third wind scatterometer currently in space joining up with the ERS-2 and the SeaWinds scatterometers. Scatterometers measure the radar backscatter from wind-generated cm-size gravity-capillary waves and provide highresolution wind vector fields over the sea with high quality. In this paper we show progress in ...

The ASCAT instrument onboard MetOp is a real aperture vertically polarized C-band radar with high radiometric stability. It has two sets of three fixed fan beam antennas, each set pointing at either side of the sub-satellite track. Because of the similarities of both the ERS (scatterometer) and ASCAT measurement systems, we have the opportunity to use the ERS geophysical model function (GMF) as...
